Hub Mandic's 2nd MeetUp of 2024 highlights innovations in the use of stem cells

The second Mandic Hub MeetUp took place on Wednesday, March 27th, at the entrance of Block M of the São Leopoldo Mandic Faculty. This monthly event aims to promote dialogue between companies and students on topics related to dentistry and medicine.

The theme of this edition was "Innovations in the Use of Stem Cells: The Experience at the Kennedy Space Center," with the participation of Prof. Dr. André Pelegrine, a professor at the institution, and José Ricardo Muniz Ferreira, CEO of R-Crio Stem Cells. The conversation was moderated by Prof. Dr. Victor Montalli.

During the meeting, Pelegrine and Muniz explained the research conducted at the space science laboratory, located in Florida, USA. The study investigated the activity of stem cells under different microgravity and oxygenation conditions.

Muniz began the discussion by explaining the origin of the project: “The initiative arose a few years ago, through a partnership between R-Crio and KSCIA International Space Academy, known for its study programs that include Brazilian researchers. I had the opportunity to meet the program leaders, which resulted in this partnership.”

In explaining the challenges faced in the research, Muniz mentioned: “When we decided to work with stem cells, the next step was to choose the source. We opted for the periosteum because it is an interesting tissue to work with and because it can be collected without a moistened source. However, we encountered human physiology. We, as human beings, have adaptations to gravity and negative reactions in bone tissue, which demands more from the mechanical side. Without this pressure, the lack of gravity results in a process very similar to osteoporosis and osteoarthritis.”

Furthermore, Pelegrine emphasized that the research will benefit space missions, in which crew members require special care during prolonged journeys: “Any trauma, however minor, can easily result in a major fracture, especially over long distances. Therefore, we are working on regenerative medicine to accelerate the healing process.”

Finally, André Pelegrine explained that the research extends to other regions beyond the Kennedy Space Center, including Brazil. He also highlighted that the research was only possible thanks to the trust of the São Leopoldo Mandic Faculty, which supported the project and allowed its execution. Check out the photos below:
