Extension is a fundamental function of the Institution, equivalent to research and teaching, and is also a way of intervening that fosters a comprehensive and integrative view of society.
The activities, events, and extension courses offered by São Leopoldo Mandic are classified according to the areas of knowledge proposed by CAPES – Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel, guided by the Faculty's commitment to excellence in teaching and completely focused on meeting social demands, also contributing to the expansion of knowledge in the areas of Medicine and Dentistry. Therefore, extension activities are a fundamental part of the Institution and always seek to increase the number of people benefiting from São Leopoldo Mandic's solutions and expertise, to increasingly address the social demands of the surrounding community, to ensure a bidirectional relationship between the Faculty and society, and to broaden access to knowledge.
To this end, São Leopoldo Mandic promotes seminars, symposia, meetings, events, and extension courses, as well as congresses to disseminate the results of research developed at the Faculty, exchanges with national and international Higher Education Institutions, integration with private organizations, pre-professional training, and cultural initiatives. All of this is aimed at developing extension activities that serve the regional community in social, cultural, and environmental terms, among other parameters.
The São Leopoldo Mandic College encourages and sponsors social actions aimed at transforming people's lives. One of the institution's most important projects is providing free medical and dental care to remote, almost inaccessible communities through the Health Boat.
It began with an idea from two young students at the Faculty, and its realization was only possible thanks to the contribution of MANDIC and the partnerships established by medical and dental students, reinforcing the commitment to practicing these professions in a humanized way, making a difference and transforming people's lives.
The documentary "Amazon: The Lung, the Blood, and the Green-Yellow Blood Cells," by photographer Giancarlo Gianelli, documented the Health Boat project and, in recognition, received an Honorable Mention from the Brazilian Association of Higher Education Institutions – ABMES in 2018.
The material includes testimonials from participants and also from members of the indigenous community of Alto Autazes, in the Amazon, showing the positive impact of such services, as well as the relevance of this social action.
The Mandic Social Movement (MSM) carries out activities with people experiencing homelessness. The story began when one of the Movement's founders was walking through downtown São Paulo and was inspired by a group of teachers who brought soup and recited poetry to people living on the streets.
I brought this idea to the institution, spoke with students, and received support from the Medical School Coordination and friends.
Since then, every month, the members of the Movement wait for the day of the action to arrive and bring food, blankets, hygiene kits, and clothes to the homeless, practicing volunteerism and bringing assistance and a friendly look to those in need.
The "MANDIC Health Express" project aims to promote medical and dental care in peripheral areas of municipalities in the southeastern region of Brazil, through educational, preventive, and curative actions.
In addition to serving the population, the project promotes professional training and updating in the medical and dental fields, and there is the possibility of developing retrospective/prospective scientific research in the field of health. This is another project that encompasses the integration of teaching, outreach, and research.
The work teams are composed of undergraduate students in Medicine and Dentistry, supervised by professors from different specialties.
Professionals working in the health field at partner institutions also participate in the project, such as health agents and dental assistants. In the dental area, treatments are carried out on adults and children in a mobile unit (trailer) equipped with 4 dental offices.
In the medical field, services will be provided in a mobile unit (trailer) with capacity for 5 medical consultations. These are educational, preventative, and curative actions in the areas of Internal Medicine, Dermatology, Gynecology, Ophthalmology, and Pediatrics.
The project also includes preventative health guidance that will be conveyed during consultations by undergraduate students using posters, large-scale models, and other playful resources, developed in accordance with the "Learning Through Play about Health" Project.
Environmental Education at MANDIC also includes an annual event called EcoMandic, which is also the name of an ongoing movement within the Faculty with projects such as the Conscious Disposal Program, which includes the Biosafety discipline itself for the Institution's courses.
Other actions that are also part of the EcoMandic movement include the creation of an Eco-point, which receives recyclable materials from the community surrounding the Faculty, recycling bins for selective waste collection, and the adoption of digital radiography in most dental appointments, which reduces the generation of developing waste and the replacement of plastic cups with individual mugs for employees.
The São Leopoldo Mandic College also supports and values culture in the educational process and the positive impact it can offer to its students and the general population.
One of the first sponsorship projects is the play Eternal Sunshine, based on the film "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" by Michel Gondry, released in 2004 and starring Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey.
The play "Eternal Sunshine," scheduled to premiere on stage in 2021, stars Letícia Spiller, Reynaldo Giannechini, Marco Griesi, Renata Brás, Roberto Arduim, and Tom Karabachian, directed by Jorge Farjalla and co-written by Victor Bigelli.
